Safes, Tiberias e Meron
Itinerary
Specialized and Authorized Guide
Discreet Dress
English: Tuesday
Travel to the city of Tiberias, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The city was founded in the 1st century by King Herod Antipas and archaeological excavations have revealed structures from the Mishnah and Talmud periods (1st-5th centuries). Visit to the old cemeteries. Rabbi Baal Hanes, one of Rabbi Akiva's students, is believed to perform miracles and his tomb is one of the most visited sites in the country. In 1337 an earthquake destroyed the original structure of Rabbi Meir's tomb, leaving only the two stone pillars that mark the burial site standing. In 1867 a new structure was built incorporating these two pillars. We will also visit the tomb of Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon (Rambam), respected as a great sage, philosopher, scholar and physician, wrote 14 volumes of the Mishne Torah. Rambam died in Egypt in 1235 and her last wish was to be taken to the shores of the Sea of Galilee to be buried in Tiberias.
We continue to Safed, a city on top of a hill and one of the four sacred cities to the People of Israel. We will walk through the Historic City and the narrow streets of the Old City, visit the Ari Hakadosh Synagogue and the Artists' Quarter.
Our next stop will be Mount Meron, where Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai (Rashbi), a 2nd century sage, is buried. Rashbi wrote the Zohar, the main text of the Kabala movement, while hiding from the Romans after the destruction of the Second Holy Temple. By tradition, Rashbi died on Lag B’Omer, the same day that a plague that had taken the lives of Rabbi Akiva's students ceased. Every year, Lag B’Omer celebrations are held at his Tomb, when thousands of Jews gather to light fires, dance, rejoice and get their three-year-old children's first haircut. -
